Accredited online classes in registered nursing teach aspiring registered nurses (RNs) the foundational skills needed for careers in nursing. Students who graduate from online schools with either a nursing associate's degree (ADN) or bachelor's (BSN) can take the RN licensing examination. There are also many programs designed for licensed practical nurses (LPNs) to upgrade to RN status with either an ADN or BSN.
Students graduate with vital knowledge needed for a career in nursing, including:
Nutrition classes provide the basics of a healthy diet and proper nutrition. Students learn about balancing diet and physical activity, medical conditions that require specialized nutritional diets (like Celiac's disease and high cholesterol), and food safety practices and measures.
Students learn how to care for patients at every point in the lifespan, from birth through death. Classes instruct future RNs in health promotion and prevention strategies to reduce illness and mortality and give guidance in caring for childbearing adults and other individuals with complex health needs.
Anatomy and Physiology
Students explore the different systems of the body. Classes and lab work enable students to examine the skeletal, muscular, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, excretory, digestive, reproductive, and endocrine systems while resting or being active.
Critical Care Nursing
RN programs offer an introduction to critical care nursing to prepare students to care for critically ill or unstable patients. Students learn how to conduct health and physical assessments, diagnostic tests and pharmacological interventions through online coursework and an onsite clinical practicum.
Classes in pathophysiology focus on the changes in normal functions brought on by either a disease or abnormality. Students investigate how these alterations affect people of all ages, observe adaptation and multiple system interactions of the body, and assess what the changes indicate for nursing care.
Coursework provides future nurses with important career skills, such as:
Students build top notch hygiene skills to prevent the spread of disease and contamination. Personal hygiene practices are covered, as well as patient hygiene care techniques, including oral care for unconscious patients, shampooing bedridden patients' hair, shaving, and bathing.
Taking Vital Signs
Students will learn to use multiple instruments and methods to take vital signs of patients. These courses will teach students how to measure body temperature, pulse rate, pulse rhythm, blood pressure and orthostatic blood pressure, and assess physical conditions, such as respiration and peripheral pulses.
