Online Carpentry Classes

The study of carpentry involves learning the art of assembling, installing, and repairing frameworks and structures made from wood and other materials. There are three types of carpenters: residential, commercial, and industrial. Residential carpenters build and remodel homes. Commercial carpenters construct commercial buildings such as offices, schools, and malls. Industrial carpenters focus on public works and industrial settings by putting up scaffolding and pouring concrete to build structural forms.

Knowledge Gained

Students will be provided with knowledge specific to carpentry in several areas such as:

Mathematics

Courses will emphasize the use of basic math skills in specific carpentry situations. Students will learn the practical application of concepts such as arithmetic, geometry, and measurement.

Building Design

Building design courses focus on the wide range of architectural, engineering, and technical methods used in the planning of building layouts. Zoning ordinances, building codes, licensing, emerging design options, and the latest green technologies are just a few examples of subjects covered throughout the course.

Construction

The coursework will also cover aspects of the construction process. These courses focus not only on the building portion of construction, such as creating working drawings, waterproofing, fireproofing, and brick laying, but also project management concepts including cost estimation, legal issues, and risk management.

Materials

Classes concentrated on the subject of materials will discuss the different uses of metals and alloys, assorted masonry, wood, glass, and other materials. Coursework will also include emerging technology and its application to carpentry.

Quality Control Analysis

Quality control analysis classes help students gain an understanding of important techniques used to maximize and maintain quality during the construction process. Students will discuss budgeting, cost/benefit analysis, manpower allocation, project feasibility, and safety.

Skills Developed

The courses will also aid students in developing valuable skills in the following areas:

Dexterity

Courses will teach students how to develop the necessary hand-eye coordination to operate the different tools that carpenters use on an everyday basis. Not only does this prevent injury, it also prevents damage to the building materials.

Judgment and Decision Making

Students learn how to adapt their approach when faced with difficult situations. No two projects are the same, and students will learn how to make the right judgment calls when the solution to a problem is not clear.

Wood Working

Students will receive specific training in manipulating wood to create and repair frameworks and structures. They will also learn the uses of different types of wood and the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Equipment Selection

The best classes teach students how to discern which equipment is appropriate for each situation. This skill translates into students' personal lives by emphasizing that every problem should be approached in a carefully chosen matter.

Time Management

Students are taught how to appropriately allocate a proper amount of time to each task. Time management skills are not only important on the construction yard, but also apply to students' everyday lives.
