Online Architecture Classes

The study of architecture focuses on the skills and knowledge that are necessary for becoming a licensed architect. By taking classes online, students will learn about the design of built structures, including aesthetic, structural and social considerations. Many classes are studios where students develop the ability to conceive, plan and represent solutions to architectural problems.

Knowledge Gained

Students can expect to acquire knowledge in the following areas:

These courses include a focus on the ability to develop and represent a visual response to a problem and explain or defend that response. The problem may be abstract or practical and may call for a 2 or 3 dimensional representation, requiring skills in drafting, model construction and 3D modeling.

The study of architectural engineering begins with learning mathematics and progresses to include the behavior and construction of structures and the use of materials. This develops students' understanding of particular structural elements and their interaction while incorporating mathematical concepts from algebra, geometry and calculus.

Architectural History

These introduce the student to the variety of structures built across various historical periods and cultures. This includes a familiarity with the forms of buildings reaching back into early civilization, as well as the methods used to construct these buildings and their social and physical contexts.

The study of communication is crucial, allowing architects to effectively transmit and defend their ideas to clients and other architects. This includes public speaking, composition, constructing documents and the general study of language.

Architectural Specializations

The design and construction of modern buildings is a highly specialized field and this type of class examines these technological and resource specialties. These include lighting, electrical, heating and site design as well as contracting and construction supervision.

Skills Developed

Students can expect to develop competence in the following skills:

Graphic Representation

Students will learn to communicate spatial ideas by commanding of various graphic techniques for exploring and planning structural possibilities. These techniques include freehand drawing and drafting in pencil, ink and color as well as computer aided design (CAD) and 3D graphics.

Problem Solving

Students are continually called upon to respond effectively to physical, spatial and social problems by designing structures. This includes the development of 2 and 3 dimensional forms, the appropriate choice of structural elements and materials and the identification of efficient design options.
